Why Try AACORN?
If your child is non-verbal or developmentally delayed then you know that far too often they (and we as adults) struggle to use the assistive devices and software that are meant to help them communicate. This has little to nothing to do with a childs ability, whether you use laminated flashcards or more hi-tech options, the process of hunting and pecking for words is a very slow and inefficient way of communicating; the work is hard and can be frustrating, individual progress varies wildly, and much too often the limits of the technology work to hide a childs true ability!
Just as we recognise every child is different, we recognised the need for a solution designed from the ground up to better meet the needs of individual children who have a wide range of abilities, and so aacorn redefines expectations for what assistive communications technology can be. Gone are the old systems of static grids and folders, replaced with a clear easy to learn user interface designed to engage children, and a revolutionary new ‘word tree’ arrangement of branching pathways that grow in response to a child’s requests.
aacorn can be MUCH easier for children to learn and use, especially those who are younger or who have cognitive challenges, but perhaps the most exciting aspect is that aacorn also actually learns and adapts to each individual child’s communication style, and this enables us to move the definition of assistive speech technology beyond apps with 'speaking buttons' to include a real solution that also TEACHES LANGUAGE.
